Federal Health Officials Investigate Taco Bell Over Nationwide Cyclospora Outbreak

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The parasitic stomach illness has been reported in more than half U.S. states.

Health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state agencies are investigating Taco Bell for a potential link to the outbreak of cyclosporiasis that has affected hundreds of people across 31 states that began in early May. Officials suspect contaminated produce, such as leafy greens and herbs. The restaurant chain has temporarily removed certain ingredients, including lettuce, cilantro, onions, and tomatoes, from many of its locations.

The CDC stated, “The true number of sick people in this multistate outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for Cyclospora. In addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it can take several weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.”

Symptoms of the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite include severe and prolonged diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, and stomach cramps.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya as he fills the role of Acting CDC director.
  • For federal health officials as they coordinate with state health personnel to find the source(s) of the cyclospora outbreak and its spread.
